Phaedra's Love
Sarah Kane
Phaedra’s Love is Sarah Kane’s radical reworking of Seneca’s classic play of incest and unrequited lust. Notoriously controversial for her work, Kane called this tragedy of an affair between a queen and her stepson “My comedy”. It premiered at the Gate Theatre, London in May 1996.
“Kane’s achievement is to have humanized the antics of the pounding royals. Her dialogue is full of reeking toughness.” Evening Standard
“Sarah Kane’s writing is both daring and accomplished.” Time Out
“Pure theatre. Or rather impure theatre: dirty, alarming, dangerous.” Observer
“Delivered with punch and laced with black humor.” Financial Times
